Raks. (Pronounced "rocks".) This is the Arabic word for "the act of dancing", and is sometimes spelled Raqs. It usually appears combined with another word that defines what type of dance--for example, Raks Leyla means "Leyla's dance". ("Leyla" is a common Arabic woman's name.) "I signed up for my first Tribal Belly Dancing Class after attending the 2009 Winter Hafla. When I watched Sarah dance I was entranced by her skill, sensuality and pure femininity. Her body moved the way mine longed to. I realized that by studying with her I could connect with my own feminine power! There are women of all shapes, sizes and abilities in my class who are embracing their bodies and their bellies as beautiful. It is through The Mayne Studio & my fellow students that I am learning to accept my own body!"
